Narrating “Great Unity”: The Educational Value of the Drama Taiping Nian in Youth National Identity Construction

  • Abstract: Amid deepening globalization and profound shifts in international dynamics, national identity education, especially the cultivation of national identity among the youth, has become a critical contemporary task for ideological and political work. The popular historical drama Taiping Nian centers on the end of the turbulent Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, featuring the storyline of “Natu Gui Song”. From an artistic narrative perspective of “Great Unity”, it presents rational decisions, concern for people’s livelihoods, and cultural integration among relevant historical figures, which provides valuable educational resources to strengthen contemporary youth’s national identity and foster the profound belief that “unity brings well-being” and “the territory is our shared homeland”. Building upon this framework, ideological and political educators in higher education should continuously explore and innovatively utilize historical analogical resources and convert such resources into teaching cases for ideological and political courses, thematic workshops, and practical activities. This approach effectively strengthens young people’s rational understanding and firm commitment to safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity, thereby ensuring the effective implementation of national identity education.
