  • Abstract: A Man’s Woman, an experimental Kunqu opera produced by the Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe, adapts Macbeth—one of Shakespeare’s four great tragedies. While Shakespearean drama and traditional Chinese opera share numerous points of convergence, they manifest distinct tragic aesthetic characteristics within a cross-cultural context. Grounded in conventional Kunqu vocal traditions, The Lady of Macbeth employs uniquely innovative narrative perspectives and stage presentation—particularly through the recurring red imagine symbolizing lust for power and destruction, and the groundbreaking use of three actors jointly portraying Macbeth to multidimensionalize his psychological complexity. Within a compact 90-minute performance, it successfully reinterprets the Western classic Macbeth through an Eastern aesthetic lens. Departing from the original framework, the opera recasts Lady Macbeth as the protagonist. This reinvention of the female lead, alongside its innovative performance forms and visual symbols, constitutes a cross-cultural theatrical adaptation of significant research value.
