Abstract:
As a crucial period of social transformation in Japanese history, the Edo period witnessed unprecedented prosperity in the circulation of knowledge and the rise of commoner culture. This paper adopts a spatial perspective, drawing on Lefebvre’s theory of the social production of space and Maruyama Masao’s theory of cultural contact, to examine the mechanisms of knowledge production and dissemination within Edo commoner culture across three dimensions: fixed spaces, mobile spaces, and heterotopic spaces. The study demonstrates that different spatial forms of knowledge circulation profoundly influenced the formation of commoners’ social character. Fixed spaces, through institutionalized education and everyday social interaction, fostered pragmatic rationality and flexible openness; mobile spaces, facilitated by specific groups and unique media such as lending libraries, promoted the formation of informal knowledge networks and cultivated an open cognitive structure and mindset; heterotopic spaces, as arenas of intercultural contact and exchange, gave rise to both cultural subjectivity and a spirit of pluralistic inclusiveness. This research provides a new analytical framework for understanding the formation of modern Japanese national character and offers a fresh perspective on the socio-cultural development of the Edo period.
