Abstract:
The desert in Forest Dark, a novel written by Nicole Krauss embodies multifaceted symbolism. To begin with, the desert is a desolate real-world environment, which unexpectedly provides Nicole with an opportunity to break free from imitation and attain autonomy. Furthermore, it deconstructs the barren conception of the desert perpetuated by male narratives, revealing instead the inherent ecosystem within the desert and the subjectivity of Nature, thereby establishing a metaphorical connection between Nature and Women. Moreover, combined with the traditional desert narratives within Jewish culture, the novel highlights the divergence between national redemptive narratives and the individual plight of women, emphasizing how women achieve self-awakening through inward exploration. The desert thus becomes a central metaphor linking nature and femininity, providing new interpretive space for understanding the dilemmas faced by women in modern life and the reconstruction of their subjectivity.
