  • Abstract: Against the backdrop of globalization, translation plays a vital role in cross-cultural communication and the international dissemination of Chinese culture. Examining the translation strategies employed in the English subtitles of Chang’an: Three Thousand Miles not only facilitates the broader outreach of Chinese culture but also contributes to the advancement of contemporary Chinese poetry translation theory. This study examines the English subtitles of the 2023 Chinese animated film Chang’an: Three Thousand Miles, which grossed 1.824 billion yuan at the box office. Employing a teleological framework, it analyzes linguistic and cultural differences between Chinese and English texts, focusing on cultural connotations, emotional expression, culturally loaded words, and translation approaches for poetic subtitles to meet crosscultural audience needs. The study demonstrates that applying teleology to cultural translation offers valuable insights for Chinese-to-English subtitle translation practice. Translating poetic subtitles requires balancing subtitle timeliness with the “three beauties” principle of poetry to enhance the literary quality and emotional impact of the translation. 全球化背景下,翻译在跨文化传播与中国文化“走出去”中担任重要角色。研究《长安三万里》英译字幕翻译策略不仅有助于中国文化更好地走出去,也有利于促进当代中国诗歌英译理论发展。本文以2023年上映、票房18.24亿元的国产动画电影《长安三万里》英文字幕为研究对象,以目的论为理论框架,对比分析汉英文本语言与文化差异,聚焦文化内涵、情感表达、文化负载词及诗歌字幕的英译路径,以适配跨文化受众需求。研究表明,目的论在文化翻译领域的应用为汉英字幕翻译实践提供了有益启示;影片诗歌字幕翻译需兼顾字幕时效性与诗歌“三美”原则,以提升译文文学性与感染力。
