- Abstract: Amor Towles’ A Gentleman in Moscow seems to depict a classic narrative of transformation from space to place, in which the hotel gradually becomes a place with warmth and meaning. However, the count does not choose to live there, but under house arrest. Initially, the hotel functions as a concrete embodiment of power, and its multilayered coding prevents the Count from developing the sense of place. But he becomes emotionally attached to the hotel. Although such feeling is real, it remains confined within the boundary imposed by power and thus cannot be regarded as the sense of place. It is not until the end of the story, when the Count leaves the hotel yet chooses to remain in Russia, that he is truly related to the sense of place. Furthermore, the fictional Count hints the American writer Towles’ distinctive interpretation of individual destiny and Russian history. Based on Yi‑Fu Tuan’s theory of sense of place, this paper explores whether an individual can develop a sense of place in confined spaces, and also reflects on the discursive boundary and applicable conditions of this theory. 埃默·托尔斯的小说《莫斯科绅士》看似描述了从空间到地方的经典叙事，酒店这一非意义之所逐渐转化为有温度的地方。然而，伯爵并非自由选择，而是被软禁于此。酒店最初作为权力的具象化载体，其多重编码阻断了伯爵地方感的产生。但是，伯爵与酒店慢慢产生了联结，酒店逐步转化为承载意义与温度的场所。此时情感联结并非虚假，但却始终发生在权力设定的边界之内，不能算地方感的生成。故事最后，伯爵离开酒店却选择留在祖国时，才能真正与地方感相联系。此外，伯爵作为美国作家他者视角下的虚构形象，暗含了作者对个体命运与俄罗斯历史的别样解读。本文以段义孚的地方感理论为核心，探讨人是否能在强制空间中产生地方感，同时也为地方感理论的话语边界与适用条件提供了思考。
