Abstract:
Taking the Chinese-English translation of Wang Wei’s poem “The Magnolia Dale” as a case example, this study conducts a comparative analysis of multiple rounds of translation practiced by human translators and AI (artificial intelligence) models such as ChatGPT-4 and DeepSeek. It reveals the dynamic mechanism of meaning generation in human-machine translation and explores collaborative approaches to the English translation of Chinese classical poetry in the AI era. The findings indicate that AI models and human translators form an ongoing “hermeneutic cycle” in the translation process: AI models provide multiple interpretative possibilities in terms of meaning, imagery, and style, while human translators, drawing on aesthetic judgment and cultural understanding, engage in the selection, refinement, and philosophical elevation of translation results and subsequently feed the results back to AI models for further optimization. This cyclical interaction effectively mitigates the dissipation of poetic essence caused by differences in cultural systems and linguistic media in the translation of Chinese classical poetry. It not only establishes a symbiotic relationship grounded in functional complementation of human translators and AI models but also offers a methodological framework to build human-AI interaction mechanisms in translation practice in the age of AI.
