Abstract:
As one of the fastest-growing emerging sports globally, pickleball is rapidly expanding from North America to the world. Based on the latest international research progress from 2024 to 2026, this paper systematically reviews the scientific evidence regarding pickleball in the areas of health promotion, sports injuries, social psychology, and athletic performance. Integrating the construction of Hainan Free Trade Port and the “Three Zones, One Center” development strategy, this study for the first time proposes a “Sports-Tourism-Health” ternary integration model for the development of pickleball in tropical island regions. The research finds that Hainan possesses unique climatic advantages, policy dividends, and an industrial foundation conducive to the development of pickleball. However, it also faces challenges such as a shortage of professional talent, a lack of standardized systems, and a mismatch in the medical prevention system. This study proposes a development pathway characterized by “four-wheel drive, three-chain integration,” namely, synergistic efforts through “policy drive, event drive, industry drive, and technology drive” to build an ecosystem deeply integrating the “pickleball sports chain, tourism service chain, and health industry chain.” This provides a theoretical framework and practical guidance for establishing Hainan as an international pickleball tourism destination.
