Abstract:
Taking Yuncheng County, Shandong Province as a case, this paper explores the social functions of grassroots sports in rural China. It breaks through the cognition of regarding grassroots sports merely as physical exercise, and defines it as a core social practice deeply integrated into education, community life, public culture and local governance. By analyzing practical forms such as the integration of sports and education, farmers’ sports meetings, rural basketball leagues and training of social sports instructors, this paper expounds the operational logic of grassroots sports as an important mechanism to promote social cohesion, drive cultural inheritance, stimulate civic participation and develop public services. The study finds that rural grassroots sports are far more than just for leisure and entertainment; they are also core carriers for rural community building, grassroots governance and the promotion of healthy lifestyles. In contemporary rural China, they have become an important social practice connecting daily physical activities with community construction, cultural continuity and local governance, providing Chinese experience for academic discussions on sports as an embedded social practice in non-Western rural contexts.
