Abstract:
The meaning of life is a crucial psychological resource for individual mental health, and related research has garnered widespread attention across various fields. With the development of the digital age, the antecedent variables influencing college students ‘meaning of life exhibit both continuity and dynamic changes in their manifestations. Based on the developmental contextual theory and the integrated model of meaning making, this paper examines the impact of core self-evaluation, self-presentation, and perceived social support on college students’ meaning of life from three perspectives: individual factors, social support, and social media usage, while balancing contextual considerations and subjective agency. Future research should further incorporate a China-specific localized perspective to explore the underlying causes of the sense of life meaning, explore into the pathways through which specific psychological experiences arising from social media use influence this sense, and enhance longitudinal studies and intervention practices regarding its developmental changes at the methodological level, aiming to provide valuable insights for mental health educators in higher education institutions.
