Abstract:
With the pervasive influence of short videos and social media, “internet celebrities” have become a significant cultural symbol shaping the self-identity of contemporary college students. Grounded in social comparison theory, this study employs a mixed methods research including questionnaire surveys, in-depth interviews, and participatory observation to examine the relationship between college students’ worship of internet celebrities and their selfidentity, with a focus on the mediating role of social comparison. The findings reveal that students’ critical evaluation of influencer content and their sense of real-life achievement serve as important protective factors against the negative effects of influencer worship. Based on these results, the paper proposes educational interventions from four perspectives: cultivating media literacy, guiding positive social comparison strategies, enhancing real-life achievement experiences, and leveraging positive role models. These suggestions provide empirical support for mental health education and value guidance in higher education institutions.
