Abstract:
The Internet is deeply integrated into the lives of youth, and issues related to Internet overindulgence have grown increasingly prominent. Understanding the underlying mechanisms of this phenomenon is crucial for developing effective intervention strategies. This study surveyed 4235 junior and secondary high school students and integrated the model of compensatory internet use, the Limited Strength Model of Self-control, and the Psychological Decompensation Hypothesis to construct a chain mediation model. The model was used to examine the impact of academic stress on youth Internet overindulgence, as well as the roles of self-control and loneliness in this relationship. Data were collected via questionnaires and analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). The results indicated that academic stress was a significant positive predictor of Internet overindulgence. Self-control and loneliness each played mediating roles in the relationship between academic stress and Internet overindulgence. More importantly, a significant chain mediation pathway was identified, following the sequence of “academic stress-self-control-loneliness-Internet overindulgence.” This study reveals a “psychological resource-emotional compensation” two-stage mechanism through which stress influences Internet overindulgence among youth, offering a new theoretical foundation and practical insights for understanding this issue.
