Abstract:
The present study aimed to examine the relationship between parental phubbing and social anxiety among junior high school students, as well as the mediating role of self-esteem in this association. For this purpose, we employed the Parental Phubbing Scale, the Social Anxiety Scale, and the Self-Esteem Scale as research instruments, and conducted a questionnaire survey and analysis among 390 junior high school students from Wuming District of Guangxi, Chengdu, and Mianyang in Sichuan Province. The results showed that parental phubbing was significantly positively correlated with junior high school students’ social anxiety, significantly negatively correlated with self-esteem, and self-esteem was significantly negatively correlated with social anxiety. Furthermore, mediation analysis indicated that self-esteem partially mediated the relationship between parental phubbing and junior high school students’ social anxiety, with the mediation effect accounting for 33.33% of the total effect. These findings suggest that Parental phubbing not only positively predicts junior high school students’ social anxiety, but also significantly negatively predicts their self‑esteem, thereby indirectly exacerbating their social anxiety.
