  • Abstract: This study aims to explore the relationships among individuals’ emotional responses, corresponding physiological indicators, gender compositions of bullies and victims when witnessing bullying incidents, and bystanders’ intervention behaviors. A total of 60 participants with similar bullying exposure experiences were recruited in this research. Their heart rate (HR) and skin conductance (SC) were measured synchronously while participants read bullying scenario narratives, and participants reported their negative emotions and intervention intentions after reading each narrative. Participants were further divided into an emotional group (characterized by elevated HR and intense negative emotions) and a non-emotional group (characterized by stable HR and mild negative emotions) according to their emotional and heart rate responses. The results indicated that emotional responses significantly predicted bystanders’ bullying intervention behaviors. Moreover, participants were most likely to intervene in bullying episodes where the bully was male and the victim was female. This study clarifies the critical roles of bystanders’ emotional reactions and the gender pairing of bullies and victims in predicting intervention behaviors, and provides practical references for targeted educational intervention programs.
