  • Abstract: This study aims to investigate the association between passive social media use and levels of social anxiety among college students in Southwest China, and to examine the mediating effect of rumination in this relationship. Using a random sampling method, a questionnaire survey was conducted among college students in Southwest China via online platforms, yielding a total of 1821 valid responses. The research instruments employed included the Passive Social Media Use Scale, the Rumination Scale, and the Social Anxiety Scale (IAS). Results from correlation analysis, regression analysis, and mediation tests revealed that: (1) Passive social media use is significantly positively correlated with social anxiety among college students (r = 0.057, p <0.05); (2) Rumination plays a mediating role between these two variables, with a significant indirect effect (the Bootstrap 95% CI does not include 0), whereas the direct effect and the indirect effect exhibit opposite directions, suggesting the presence of a suppression effect. The findings indicate that passive social networking sites use is indirectly associated with elevated social anxiety, mediated by an enhanced tendency toward rumination.
