Abstract:
In this case, a first-year male college student actively sought help due to “social anxiety, persistent loneliness, and a sense of meaninglessness in life”. Based on the developmental history assessment, his surface symptoms stemmed from cumulative attachment trauma across multiple stages from infancy to adolescence, which formed an internal object relation of “self-unworthiness — other-sunreliability” and a rigid defense mode. Under the guidance of object relations theory, the counselor conducted 22 face-to-face counseling sessions and used techniques such as empathic acceptance and transference analysis to help the client repair his internal object relations. After the intervention, the client’s symptoms of social anxiety were alleviated, his feelings of loneliness and meaninglessness were reduced, his core negative beliefs were loosened, and his interpersonal relationships and real-life functioning were improved. This case confirms the guiding significance and intervention value of object relations theory for the repair of attachment trauma in college students. Meanwhile, it suggests that the repair of attachment trauma is a long-term and gradual process, which requires the combination of systematic intervention strategies to promote the client’s in-depth personality growth.
