Abstract:
The client, Xiao Wei (pseudonym), is a 21-year-old unmarried female and a second-year college student. One month ago, following the sudden, unmediated termination of a close friendship — with the other party refusing all communication — the client began experiencing worries and fears regarding future interpersonal relationships. These psychological distress symptoms were accompanied by impaired sleep quality, characterized by frequent nighttime awakenings. Recognizing her deteriorating mental state, the client proactively scheduled a psychological counseling session via phone and attended as planned. To address the client’s needs, the counselor integrated three theoretical frameworks: the Friendship Dissolution Process Model, Self-Determination Theory (SDT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Intervention focused on four core objectives: providing targeted psychological support, reducing emotional avoidance and cognitive fusion, stabilizing the client’s mental state, and facilitating acceptance of the relationship ending, and rebuilding a sense of autonomy to reduce over-reliance on external evaluations for self-worth.
