Abstract:
Relational Frame Theory (RFT), as a behavioral account of human language and cognition, is currently undergoing a profound shift in its philosophical foundations — moving from the traditional framework of Skinnerian operant behaviorism and turned to the systematic and integrated theoretical system framework of interbehavioral psychology. This shift not only provides RFT with a more robust meta-theoretical foundation but also opens new possibilities for its application in explaining complex human behavior and in psychotherapy. This paper systematically reviews the theoretical motivations, core implications, and far-reaching significance of this shift for the development of RFT, and explores in depth its impact on process-based therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. The findings indicate that interbehavioral psychology, through its unique field perspective, systematic methodology, and non-causal explanatory framework, facilitates a transformation of RFT from a “mechanistic model” toward a “process-system model”, thereby enhancing the comprehensiveness and coherence of behavior analysis in explaining dynamic, contextualized psychological events. This shift not only deepens our understanding of core concepts such as relational responding, self, and values, but also provides a more flexible and individualized practical framework for ACT and process-based therapy, leading to the emergence of Process-based Behavior Therapy, and marking the entry of behavior analysis into a more mature and integrated stage of development.
