Abstract:
The innovations of the Internet give birth to something new naturally and continuously, involving newly emerging occupations and related expressions. In the era of we-media, the use of “up主” is a case in point. “up主” is a loanword from “uploader”. Its translation fully demonstrates the semantic transformation and powerful word-formation of Chinese professional suffixes. Based on a contrast between English and Chinese occupational suffixes in terms of word-formation and pragmatic effect, this paper, with “up主” as an example, explores the relationship between the generation of emerging words in Chinese and English. It is herein proposed that newly emerging occupational words should meet multiple linguistic requirements, specifically the norms of word-formation, semantic and pragmatic, and also the needs of naming during social development.
