Abstract:
Objective: To investigate the association between negative life events, interpersonal relationships and suicidal ideation among college freshmen. Methods: A total of 781 college freshmen from a university in Shaanxi were surveyed using the Adolescent Life Events Scale, the Interpersonal Relationship Needs Questionnaire, and the Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire with the cluster sampling method. Results: The prevalence of suicidal ideation among college freshmen was 15.1 per cent, of which 0.9 per cent had frequent suicidal ideation. Suicidal ideation, negative life events and interpersonal needs were significantly correlated among college freshmen. The mediation effect test showed that interpersonal needs fully mediated the association between negative life events and suicidal ideation, with a mediation effect size of 0.092. Conclusion: Negative life events have not only directly influenced the suicidal ideation of college freshmen, but also influencing suicidal ideation by increasing their thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness.
