Abstract:
Objective: To explore the relationship between passive social networking site (SNS) use and depression, and to examine the mediating role of fear of missing out (FoMO) in the association between passive SNS use and depression. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted among 200 participants from a hospital in Xinjiang, using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), the Passive Social Networking Site Use Questionnaire, and the Fear of Missing Out Scale (FoMOs). Results: Depression was significantly positively correlated with FoMO (p<0.05), depression was positively correlated with passive SNS use (p<0.05), and FoMO was positively correlated with passive SNS use (p<0.05). FoMO fully mediated the relationship between passive SNS use and depression. Conclusion: Passive SNS use can influence depression through the mediating effect of FoMO.
