Abstract:
With the widespread adoption of the Internet, excessive use of social networking sites has become increasingly prevalent among young netizens, particularly college students. Therefore, it is urgent to explore the causes of social network addiction and to guide students toward healthier usage behaviors. This study employed a questionnaire survey with 497 freshmen to junior students from a university in Guangxi to examine the relationship between fear of negative evaluation and social network addiction, as well as the potential mediating roles of social anxiety and loneliness. The results showed that: (1) fear of negative evaluation, social anxiety, loneliness, and social network addiction were all significantly and positively correlated with one another; (2) social anxiety mediated the relationship between fear of negative evaluation and social network addiction; (3) loneliness mediated the relationship between the two; and (4) social anxiety and loneliness played a chain mediating role in the relationship between fear of negative evaluation and social network addiction. The findings suggest that alleviating fear of negative evaluation and social anxiety and reducing loneliness are effective approaches to lowering the risk of social network addiction among college students. This can be achieved by strengthening mental health education to help students rationally interpret others’evaluations, as well as by providing social skills training and group psychological counseling to enhance their real-life social competence, thereby preventing and reducing social network addiction.
